Bones are the hardest tissues in your body, but they can split or break under too much pressure or force. Fractures can occur in a variety of ways. The most common causes of fractures are traumatic injuries, prolonged stress from overuse, and bone-weakening diseases, such as osteoporosis or tumors.
There are many types of fractures. They can range from a hairline crack to a bone that has broken into several pieces. Some simple fractures can be treated right in our office, while more complex breaks may require surgery. Non-operative treatments for fractures may include braces, orthotics or casts.
Some of the common traumatic fractures we see include:
- Stress fracture – a hairline crack that occurs as a result of overuse; it is most commonly seen in the lower leg or foot, typically among athletes
- Complete fracture– the bone is completely broken into separate pieces
- Incomplete or partial fracture – a crack that does not completely break the bone into two pieces
- Greenstick fracture – an incomplete fracture that occurs when the bones bends but does not completely break; it is more common in children
- Comminuted – the bones are broken into several pieces; this type of fracture typically occurs as a result of a high impact trauma or osteoporosis
- Compound or open fracture – bone fragments penetrate the skin
- Simple or closed fracture – bone fragments do not penetrate the skin
- Nondisplaced – the bone is broken but maintains its alignment
- Displaced – the bone is broken and fragments are out of position
